The Uturn Data Solutions internship program is designed to give people from all backgrounds practical experience and the chance to explore and contribute in a professional technical setting.

Uturn is an AWS Advanced Tier consulting partner. Our clients span sizes from early-stage startups interested in adopting AWS to billion-dollar enterprises and nearly every size in between those two. The “industry verticals” we service currently have a heavy FinTech, Healthcare and BioTech, and Logistics slant, but we are also active across (but not limited to) the hospitality industry, manufacturing, and public service sectors.

The Cloud Engineering Internship has a heavy DevOps slant, and your time will be a combination of learning or gaining a deeper understanding of DevOps and SRE concepts, especially how they are applied in AWS. At the end of your internship, you will be expected to have earned your AWS Cloud Practitioner certification, HashiCorp Terraform Associate certification, or possibly both – and others!

The Data Engineering Internship includes related work in Data Engineering, MLOps, and Descriptive/Predictive Analytics. Your time will be a combination of learning or gaining a deeper understanding of current data & analytics trends and AI/ML utilizing relevant AWS services. At the end of your internship, you will be able to articulate and understand a specific Data & Analytics needs of a customer and what is the path to identify and apply relevant AWS services for customer solutions.

The Sales/Marketing Internship will be focused on research and outbound sales and marketing initiatives. The sales/marketing interns will be organizing data, scrubbing lists, contacting prospective customers to ensure we have proper contact info, following up on campaigns to drive business development engagement, developing and publishing social media content to create awareness, and assisting the sales teams with active prospecting campaigns. This is a highly motivated individual that will develop an understanding of the cloud computing landscape and be able to assist with Uturn’s business development initiatives.

The internship opportunities come in two forms: one for active students between terms and a longer internship for people who have completed their education but would like to get some real-world exposure before continuing to a non-internship position. The below chart outlines the differences between the two concerning requirements and expectations. Please note that the Sales/Marketing internship is only Academic.

As an intern, you can expect to have weekly reviews with your coordinator, participate in one or more projects related to the area of your internship such, and work with the rest of the team on client projects. If you have any questions, please scroll down to a Q&A with former Intern and current Cloud Engineer Sarah Chovanec.

Q&A with Sarah Chovanec, 2022 Intern

Uturn: How much knowledge did you have about DevOps/Cloud Engineering when you started?

SC: I had minimal knowledge in the cloud environment before encountering Uturn.

Uturn: What were some of the things you enjoyed most about your internship?

SC: My co-workers are very knowledgeable and assisted me throughout my internship. I was able to gain real work experience. As an intern, I learned valuable information and skills, and after becoming a Cloud Engineer, continue to learn every day.

Uturn: What were some of the most difficult things you encountered with your internship?

SC: Not having any Terraform experience or much knowledge of AWS, completing the ‘Tech Challenge’ was a big milestone for me. Learning when to ask for help- the team is always more than willing to help each other out.

Uturn: If you could give advice to your past self, right before starting, what would it be?

SC: Looking back, I wish I started looking into AWS and had a bit more knowledge than I did starting the internship.

Uturn: How should someone prepare for a Cloud Engineering internship at Uturn?

SC: Have basic knowledge of AWS and Terraform, this will help you hit the ground running with confidence. Be a sponge, but also be able to pave your own path and prepare to challenge yourself.

Uturn: Why would someone want to be a Cloud Engineering intern at Uturn versus a big company like Google, Microsoft, or Salesforce?

SC: In my experience, I feel that Uturn takes the time to learn and engage with everyone. As an intern they treat you as they would treat their full-time employees. Uturn does not have the massive number of employees like Google- therefore you get to know and learn everyone and their roles. This is helpful because you get the opportunity to learn from each individual and receive some good food for thought.
